Biodiversity of Yamuna River

When people talk about the Yamuna in Delhi, pollution is usually the first subject that comes to mind. But behind the polluted stretches is another story: the Yamuna floodplain remains an important ecological landscape supporting birds, aquatic organisms, vegetation and wetland habitats.
A healthy river is not simply a channel carrying water. It is an interconnected ecosystem of water, wetlands, vegetation, soil and wildlife.
The floodplain is the river's living landscape
The Yamuna floodplain contains wetlands, grasslands, seasonal water bodies and patches of vegetation. These areas provide food, shelter and breeding or resting habitats for many organisms.
The Yamuna Biodiversity Park is one example of ecological restoration in the river landscape. Its wetlands and restored habitats support resident and migratory birds and demonstrate how degraded river landscapes can be given ecological functions again.
Birds of the Yamuna landscape

Pollution affects biodiversity

High organic pollution increases the demand for oxygen. When dissolved oxygen becomes extremely low, aquatic organisms face severe stress.
Pollutants can also affect fish, insects, microorganisms and aquatic plants. When these organisms decline, birds and other wildlife that depend on them can also be affected.
The ecological impact therefore moves through the food chain.
Polluted water → damaged aquatic life → reduced food availability → stressed wildlife → degraded ecosystem
The importance of the floodplain
The floodplain also has an important role during high-flow events.
Naturally functioning floodplains can temporarily store water and provide space for the river to spread during floods. Vegetation and wetlands contribute to ecological stability.
Urban development that removes or fragments these natural areas can reduce their ability to perform these functions.
Protecting the floodplain is therefore both a biodiversity issue and an urban resilience issue.
Restoration is possible
One of the most encouraging aspects of the Yamuna story is that ecological restoration can produce visible results.
The Yamuna Biodiversity Park demonstrates how wetlands and native vegetation can be restored to create habitats for wildlife. Similar restoration approaches can help reconnect people with the river while improving ecological functions.
The objective should not be to create artificial gardens that merely look green.
A successful river restoration project should recreate ecological relationships:
Native vegetation.
Wetlands.
Seasonal water bodies.
Grasslands.
Aquatic habitats.
Bird habitats.
Natural floodplain functions.
What can citizens do?
Biodiversity conservation is not limited to scientists and government agencies.
Citizens can help by avoiding littering, keeping wetlands clean, respecting bird habitats, supporting native vegetation and reporting activities that damage ecologically sensitive areas.
Photography and birdwatching can also become powerful tools for awareness when carried out responsibly.
The Yamuna is still alive
The most important message is that the Yamuna landscape should not be defined only by its pollution.
Wildlife continues to use parts of the river system, and restoration projects show that degraded landscapes can regain ecological value.
If Delhi protects its floodplains, improves water quality and restores wetlands, the Yamuna can once again become an important urban ecological corridor.
Saving the Yamuna therefore means saving more than a river.
It means protecting an entire living ecosystem.
