Current Status of Yamuna River in Delhi

The Yamuna is one of the most important rivers associated with Delhi. It enters the National Capital Territory near Palla in the north and travels roughly 52 kilometres through Delhi before leaving the city near Jaitpur. Yet the river that has shaped Delhi's geography, culture and history is today facing one of its most serious ecological crises.

The Yamuna is one of the most important rivers associated with Delhi. It enters the National Capital Territory near Palla in the north and travels roughly 52 kilometres through Delhi before leaving the city near Jaitpur. Yet the river that has shaped Delhi's geography, culture and history is today facing one of its most serious ecological crises.

The Delhi stretch of the Yamuna has become particularly vulnerable between Wazirabad and Okhla. A 2025 study commissioned by the Delhi Government describes the approximately 22-kilometre Wazirabad–Okhla stretch as one of the most severely polluted sections of the river. Major drains, including the Najafgarh Drain, discharge wastewater into this stretch.

What is happening to the river?

One of the clearest indicators of river health is dissolved oxygen, or DO. Healthy aquatic ecosystems require sufficient oxygen in the water. When large quantities of organic pollution enter a river, microorganisms consume oxygen while breaking down that material. As oxygen levels fall, fish and other aquatic organisms struggle to survive.

Recent monitoring has continued to show severe pollution in several Delhi locations. A June 2026 report based on DPCC monitoring found that faecal-coliform levels remained far above the bathing-water standard at several locations. At ISBT Bridge, for example, the reported level was 1,30,000 MPN/100 ml in May 2026 against a standard of 2,500 MPN/100 ml. At Asgarpur, the reported level increased to 3,30,000 MPN/100 ml.

Why is the Yamuna so polluted?

Sewage is one of the central problems.

According to information provided to the Government of India in 2025, Delhi's estimated sewage generation was about 3,596 million litres per day. Although the city had 37 operational sewage treatment plants with an installed capacity of 3,474 MLD, around 641 MLD of sewage was reported as untreated and entering the river or drainage network as of June 2025.

The problem is therefore not simply the absence of sewage-treatment plants. It also involves sewer connectivity, treatment efficiency, infrastructure gaps, interception of drains and the quality of treated discharge.

Industrial wastewater, solid waste and other urban pollutants add further pressure. The Delhi Pollution Control Committee has identified sewage, dairy and cattle waste, solid waste and other urban activities among the sources affecting the river.

The foam problem

The white foam frequently seen around Kalindi Kunj has become one of the most recognisable images of Yamuna pollution.

A 2025 Delhi Government study on Yamuna frothing notes that pollution from sewage and other wastewater sources contributes to the river's deteriorating ecological condition. The study also highlights high levels of parameters such as BOD, COD, ammonia and phosphates in the Delhi stretch.

Foam, however, is only a visible symptom. The deeper problem is the continuous load of pollutants entering a river whose flow through Delhi is relatively limited.

Is the Yamuna beyond recovery?

No.

The river still has stretches where water quality can be substantially better. Government data reported in December 2025 showed that the Palla stretch had comparatively healthy BOD and DO values during September 2025.

This demonstrates an important point: the Yamuna is not simply a "dead river" from its source to its confluence. Its condition changes dramatically depending on location, flow, wastewater discharge and seasonal conditions.

What needs to change?

Cleaning the Yamuna requires more than removing visible foam or floating waste.

The priority should be:

  • Complete interception of untreated sewage entering the river.

  • Better sewer connectivity across the city.

  • Upgradation and proper operation of sewage-treatment plants.

  • Effective treatment of industrial effluents.

  • Continuous monitoring of drains and treatment plants.

  • Protection of the floodplain and wetlands.

  • Reduction of solid-waste dumping.

  • Greater public participation and accountability.

The Government of India reported in December 2025 that 35 projects under the Namami Gange programme had been sanctioned for Yamuna rejuvenation, with an estimated cost of ₹6,534 crore and planned STP capacity of 2,243 MLD; 21 projects had been completed at that time.

A river is more than a water body

The Yamuna is part of Delhi's identity. It supports floodplain ecosystems, influences groundwater and has shaped the city's historical development.

Restoring it will not happen overnight. But the river can recover if pollution is stopped at its source and ecological restoration is treated as a long-term programme rather than a short-term cleanup campaign.

The real question is not whether Delhi needs the Yamuna.

The real question is whether Delhi is prepared to protect the river it depends upon.
