Pollution: The Biggest Threat to Yamuna

For centuries, the Yamuna has been an essential part of life around Delhi. Today, however, the river is struggling under the weight of sewage, industrial wastewater, solid waste and other pollutants.

The pollution crisis is particularly severe in the Delhi stretch of the river, where urban wastewater enters through a network of drains.

Sewage is at the centre of the crisis

The largest challenge is untreated or inadequately treated sewage.

Delhi generates thousands of million litres of sewage every day. In June 2025, government data indicated estimated sewage generation of around 3,596 MLD. Although treatment capacity existed through dozens of sewage-treatment plants, about 641 MLD of sewage was still reported as untreated and entering the river or drainage network.

This untreated sewage contains organic matter, nutrients, detergents, pathogens and other contaminants.

When this material enters the river, bacteria and other microorganisms break down the organic matter and consume dissolved oxygen. Excessive oxygen consumption can create conditions that are hostile to aquatic life.

Why does the foam appear?

The thick white foam visible in parts of the Yamuna is not simply a cosmetic problem.

The Delhi Government's 2025 study on Yamuna frothing identified a combination of wastewater-related pollutants and chemical conditions associated with the formation and persistence of foam. High concentrations of pollutants such as phosphates, ammonia and organic matter can contribute to the phenomenon.

The foam is therefore a warning sign of a larger water-quality problem.

Drains connect the city to the river

Delhi has an extensive drainage network. Some drains carry stormwater, while others receive wastewater from urban areas.

The CPCB's monitoring network includes important locations such as the Najafgarh Drain, Shahdara Drain, Barapula Drain and several other drains that connect with the Yamuna.

The Najafgarh and Shahdara drains have historically been particularly important contributors to pollution loads.

This means that cleaning only the visible river surface cannot solve the problem. Pollution must be intercepted before it reaches the river.

Industrial pollution also matters

Industrial wastewater can contain chemicals and pollutants that require specialised treatment.

Government assessments have repeatedly identified industrial effluent as one of the factors affecting Yamuna water quality. In December 2025, the Government of India specifically identified untreated or partially treated sewage, gaps in industrial effluent treatment and delays in sewage-treatment projects among the major reasons for continuing pollution.

Industrial areas therefore need effective common effluent treatment systems and strict compliance monitoring.

Solid waste makes the problem worse

Plastic, packaging material, religious waste and other solid waste can enter drains and the river.

Even when solid waste does not directly create the same chemical pollution as sewage, it damages river habitats, blocks drainage systems and affects wildlife.

The solution requires better waste collection, segregation, recycling and enforcement against dumping.

Why cleaning the river is difficult

The Yamuna is not polluted at one single location.

It is affected by multiple sources along the urban stretch. This makes river restoration a systems problem.

A successful programme must simultaneously address:

Sewage → Sewer network → Treatment plants → Drains → Industrial discharge → Solid waste → Floodplain → River flow

If one part fails, the river continues to receive pollution.

What can citizens do?

Citizens cannot build sewage-treatment plants, but they can reduce the pressure placed on the river.

Simple actions include:

  • Never throw plastic or household waste into drains.

  • Avoid dumping पूजा material and other waste near the river.

  • Report illegal dumping and pollution.

  • Reduce single-use plastic.

  • Support local river-cleaning and awareness initiatives.

  • Participate in floodplain and biodiversity restoration activities.

  • Encourage institutions and businesses to manage wastewater responsibly.

The solution is prevention

The Yamuna does not need another campaign that only removes what is already visible.

It needs a system that prevents pollution from entering the river in the first place.

Every drain that is successfully intercepted, every sewage-treatment plant that works to standard and every hectare of floodplain that is protected represents a step toward recovery.

The Yamuna can become cleaner—but only when pollution prevention becomes more important than pollution removal.
